BULLETIN OF THE ROLLS-ROYCE OWNERS' CLUB OF AUSTRALIA
WESTERN AUSTRALIA BRANCH (INC)
The views expressed in this publication are not necessarily those of the Rolls-Royce Owners' Club of Australia
EDITOR - ANDREW MARSDEN
Lynette
Whyte absolutely dwarfed, but very elegantly so, by the mighty 1967 Rolls-Royce
Phantom V 5VF159, Mulliner-Park Ward Limousine. This car is now owned by the
Sir Henry Royce Foundation of Australia.
It was a real WA Club privilege to be able to use this car briefly
before it was crated up to return to the Eastern States.

Editorial
This
Edition of the Winged Messenger should come with all the pictures in full colour.
There has been a flurry of telephone calls back and forth from David Jay, who
was keen to try and get the magazine printed in colour. He has done the leg work,
and I have simply put together the magazine as usual, but through different printers.
Apparently, the cost differential is ignorable for the benefit of having out beautiful
cars, and Club members featured in full colour. And so
I promptly publish
the magazine with a black car on the front, adorned by an elegant lady, dressed
essentially in white, but the grass is green
and the flowers in her hat are pink, so colour
has arrived in the Winged Messenger.
Now I need pictures of your splendid cars, in full colour, and a three quarter right front view, with the car almost filling the screen. The image is complete with a proud owner, standing by the door, and that picture will be on the short list for the next front page!!! So send me some pictures, please!
Part
of the deal, I understand, is to run an advertisement for the Printers on the
back page, so if you do have any printing requirements for home or for your work,
please consider the City Printing and Design
company, and mention that you saw their advertisement on the back of this Magazine

The
President's Jottings
Dear Club Member,
It's Christmas time and it's an opportunity to love thy neighbour and set the New Year's resolutions. It has been a tumultuous year, with few wins for anyone. War is raging in a number of parts of the world, and we have our troops protecting the freedoms we take for granted in Australia. Our best wishes must go to our fighting men and women during this festive season. For those of us lucky to be living in Australia, the year started with the government warning of a serious financial collapse that would affect us all. So far we have been fortunate in that the recession has been relatively mild. It has not been so in the US, UK and the EU. For those who count on their savings, it has not been without a lot of financial pain. The markets are slowly recovering and with luck we will all see a return to normality by 2011. There may be more surprises ahead, so keep the hatches battened down.
For our club, it's been a steady course of driving straight ahead with no breakdowns. We pulled off a hugely successful rally in Albany, thanks to the leadership of Glenice and Mick and a superb rally committee. Our new committee is fortunate to have many tried and proven members who raise their hand each year to provide leadership in such areas as; financial management, events organization, social events, club secretary duties and the many other activities that all just happen when we have good people on the committee. Well that takes leadership, time and hard work and that is what our committee does each first Monday of the month. Please come by some time, we would enjoy having any club member come and listen and put your ideas forward. Ideas that are accepted then require implementation into actions. Let me summarize some of the new items we have going:
.
We are working with Andrew Marsden for colour in the Winged Messenger (David Jay
and Andrew Marsden have the lead on this) We are again forming a "Technical
and Spares officer" position on the committee. This position will lead to
at least two technical events each year. If you want to assist or lead this role
please let me or a committee member know.
. We are seeking each month or whenever the ideas strike you, of articles for
the Winged Messenger. We need some sparkle here of new ideas about the cars or
just about your personal experiences. Please let Andrew know, with photos if you
have any.
. A calendar of forthcoming events will be issued well in advance , and that will
be led by the committee and Mick Rust.
Many
of us enjoy a concessional road license that
reduces the licensing cost to $ 35 per year. These are for cars that are used
for club events only. Please make sure that our club registrar knows that you
have gone through the annual check. Your distinguished club president is remiss
in the matter and I have taken a keel hauling by the committee for not keeping
mine up to date. Roger Fry will see my SC 111 very soon. (See Page 11 in this
Magazine
)
Hilary and I would like to wish you all a very happy festive season and may next year bring you good health and happiness.
Dick and Hilary Erskine, and the RROC WA Committee

R-R Body Walkers
Each Month on a regular Sunday, several Club members get up early and join Lynette Whyte on a Rolls-Royce walk. The aim is to look after our own bodies as best we can, with a regular exercise programme. Lynette chooses the meeting place and time, usually early, to beat the heat, and the intrepid walkers head off. The bonus is that at the end of the walk, there is usually a convenient café, wherein breakfast is served and enjoyed by the assembled crowd, doubtless balancing up the previous hour or so's calorie output but it is still fun. In the picture below left, you can see that David Jay has just arrived at the top of Jacob's Ladder, on the side of King's Park, to be advised by Lynette Whyte, that "if he was really serious about his fitness he'd go back down and up again before having his breakfast." His reply was colourful, in keeping with new features of the Magazine, but hardly printable.

Ad Astral Visit
Ron and Di Magrath run a charter airline business and pilot training school at Perth Airport, so with tongue in cheek (as he didn't think this would be of much interest) Ron offered to show members around and explain the operation of the business.(Ron had a distinguished career in the RAAF and was an F111 jet fighter pilot). This event was organised as a Sunday Club event to be followed by lunch at Woodbridge Manor in Guildford.
The
event was very well attended, far exceeding Ron and Di's expectations. On arrival
we were welcomed with coffee, cakes, and scones etc in the wood panelled departure
lounge. In groups of 6, members were then taken for a tour of the Operations Room
in the main building and visited one of the charter aircraft. This aircraft has
2 pilots and carries about 20 people, and has a toilet. The toilet was at the back
and quote of the day must go to the lady (she shall remain nameless) who said
"AND WHAT A LOVELY VIEW", not realizing that the large cargo door opposite
the toilet was lifted up for loading and would not be so positioned during the
flight
There
then followed an explanation of the 2 flight simulators and the opportunity to
'fly' them. From observation, it looked as though our members should stick to
driving cars and not flying aircraft (not planes, we were told). Apparently pilots
with single engine experience are trained to fly twin engined aircraft, together
with all the instrument ratings etc that are required, in these simulators, and
then go on to the real thing. They then usually go to charter companies to gain
experience and then possibly on to commercial airlines. Ron and Di have frequently
heard, when flying on commercial aircraft that they are being piloted by crew
who had been trained at their training facility. (That could, of course, be a
bit of a worry
)
All very interesting
, and very well organised and very interesting to the members who attended. If
you didn't, you missed a worthwhile event.
Afterwards we all departed for a 10 minute drive to Woodbridge Manor where a very sociable lunch was held.
A very successful event and many thanks to Ron and Di for opening their doors to the Club Members for this interesting day.

Annual President's Dinner
This year our annual formal President's Dinner was held on Saturday 19th September 2009 at Royal Perth Golf Club, the venue having been chosen for its central location and ample parking. There was a very loud hum of conversation, as long time members, who had not met during the year, caught up with each other and the regulars, as usual, discussed anything and everything relating to proper motor cars.
We then moved to the main dining area where very suitable music, at just the right volume, welcomed us to the nicely decorated tables for the around 80 members and guests who attended.
Master
of Ceremonies, Brian Tilbury introduced New President Dick Erskine. Dick welcomed
those present and briefly talked about the importance to him of having been a
member for 30 years, and talked about, and encouraged members, that if they were
in England, they should try and visit Hunt House, the permanent residence of the
R-REC, world-wide. Dick has described his visit to Hunt House in the last edition
of the Winged Messenger.

a very Elegant Evening!
Next came 'Grace' offered by Di Magrath with the
addition of "and please do not let Collingwood win tonight" (
or
was it lose tonight?")
The dinner menu provided a choice and the food and service proved to be excellent
and was followed by various toasts, all well delivered by those proposing. All
the wine and drinks for the evening were provided by our Club, from Plantagenet
Next Ron Magrath, our Chief Judge and Vice President, talked about Concours and The Federal Rally held at Albany this year. He then presented the Awards to the winners in the various categories. The Best Car at the Concours Overall, went to a very deserving Evan Edwards, for his lovely razor style green Bentley, featured previously in these pages.
We were then entertained to a very enthusiastic ballroom dancing display by 2 young people, who were just about to compete in National competitions. It was all very expert and vigorous, with split second timing, and we wished them the very best in their future endeavours.
The rest of the night was for socialising and dancing to the music of DJBRONIA, with music from the 50's 60's and 70's, which seemed to suit the occasion and was very well received.
The
whole evening was a great success and our thanks go to Lynette
Whyte our social secretary for so professionally organising the event.
With a good ambience, excellent food, service and ease of parking, the venue proved
to be just right for the occasion and was promptly booked for next year, when
it is hoped even more will attend.

Annual Club Christmas Dinner
This
article will be mainly photographs, as a picture paints a thousand words, and
the Christmas Lunch was another most enjoyable Meeting for the Club Members who
attended. The 2009 Christmas celebration was once again organized at the Rosehill
Country Club - such a beautiful setting and we were able to display the cars on
the lawn. The Phantom V was able to be put on display before it is crated back
to the Eastern States later this month. Some 66 people attended the lunch and
all seemed to have a great time. There were pre-Lunch "horses d'ouveries",
and drinks followed by a wonderful Lunch.
During the festivities, the assembled crowd auctioned a mounted print of the exquisite R-R Company car, AX201, which member Jack Cohen won. The money from this auction and the monies raised from our wonderful raffles, will be donated to the RSPCA.

another Great Social Gathering
Brian and Maria Tilbury generously donated
a pair of beautiful Christmas baskets - 1 large and 1 small, and Di
Magrath made the famous Christmas cake.
Some chairs had a lucky number on the bottom and the lucky winners won a bottle of champagne. Some of the excess wine from our very successful Federal Rally in Albany was also presented as special gifts to the youngest person there and to two members who had brought along some friends. It was a warm and sunny afternoon, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Once again, thanks must go to Lynnette Whyte for organizing the venue and vetting the menu, and pre-Dinner Drinks. (Words mainly by Lynnette Whyte, photos various and thankyou)
(Her efforts and elegance are reflected in the photograph of her with the Phantom V Limousine on the Front Cover, which is why I chose the picture Editor)

The
Annual Brockwell Memorial Run
Sunday 8th November 2009
This
year the cars met at Cannington Town Hall to support the 100 year anniversary
of The Hall.
As usual the event is interesting because of the wide variety and age of the cars
participating
.
There is a great opportunity to look at all these cars, prior to departing to
Whiteman Park. We were not disappointed with cars ranging from a very well restored
1913 model T to a very late Bentley.
The Mayor very enthusiastically waved a flag to set the cars off on the run to
the Motor Museum, and continued waving his flag until all the cars had departed.
For those wanting a 'decent run in the car', the route to Whiteman Park took the
cars to Fremantle and then along the coast to Hillarys. We then turned inland
across to Whiteman Park. This was a very pleasant 2hr drive to enjoy our 'proper
motoring'.
At Whiteman Park the museum was open to those who had participated.
Members of the various clubs split up into different areas to have lunch. The
wily Mick Rust having arrived earlier and had carefully reserved a very good spot
for us and also erected one of our shade tents.
The weather was very pleasant and those attending thoroughly enjoyed the day.
It was something of a disappointment that only 7 cars from our WA R-ROC participated.

CONCESSIONAL
REGISTRATION.
Owners with vehicles on concessional registration are reminded of the conditions
attached to code 404 registration.
Firstly, if you don't know what code 404 is
(or have forgotten) then you had better find out. Look on your vehicle registration
certificate, down towards the bottom and you will see a set of conditions listed.
The most common are:-
OO1. Licence (registration certificate) to be carried in
vehicle at all times.
OO3. Daylight use only
OO4. Licence (registration) not transferable without prior approval of DOT.
O89. Vehicle to be used on Club events or road testing only. "HISTORIC"
plates to be fitted above normal number plates.
Abuse of or non-compliance with any listed condition puts you in the "Infringement"
zone. If stopped on the road you will firstly have to answer to the police and,
if your case results in the police taking action and involving the DOT, you may
also have to answer to your colleagues in the Club and explain to them why you
think you have the right to put everyone else in jeopardy because of your neglect.
If you have not yet put your HISTORIC plates or (this year blue) windscreen sticker
in place, do it now.
Further information is available in the Council of Motoring Club's Concession
Booklet on their website at http://www.councilofmotoringclubs.asn.au/
under Documents, then Information.
