April 2013 update

Henry Royce's 150th Birthday

Sir Henry Royce, First Baronet Seaton, would have turned 150 as we raised our glasses. This was an impromptu Club Run held on the very day of the birthday, 27 March, which was a weekday and meant those still in the workforce couldn't make it. Never mind, a light luncheon, a quiet drink, and a toast to Henry Royce, Mechanic.

Club Videos

Club members will have seen the Webmaster buzzing about with a video camera at club runs since— well— January 2011. That's when I bought my first "proper" video camera, that is, one which records at the same definition as your Hi-definition TV or Blue-Ray Video. (Standard definition TV is 575 lines high, while full hi-definition is 1020 lines high. And the popular 16:9 widescreen ratio has a resolution of 1920 across by 1080 down.)

I bought the camera primarily for my European trip in June 2011 which encompassed England, the Western Islands of Scotland, and Italy. Before then, though, I began shooting club runs and anything else I could point a lens at. I usually had the feeling, very common with home video photographers, that I was shooting hours and hours of video when in fact it turned out to be mere minutes. Some bits and pieces I shot have been posted on YouTube and are linked to the this Website via the video gallery.

Now the time has arrived when I can, with some confidence, edit and assemble the Club footage onto a DVD or Blue-Ray disc, and I am toiling away on it even as I speak. My first disc will probably cover 2011-2012. There will of course be gaps; I didn't attend every event, and on some events I took only still cameras.

Coverage of a day's run is necessarily brief, as each one has about 2 to 4 minutes, so the total would probably come out at a bit over 40 minutes. I have yet to master the subtleties of voice-over, and overdubbed music, so I am still not up to Studio quality production standards.

However, I expect to have a test DVD ready to go soon, and will be able to report further.
